18K vs 21K vs 22K Gold: Which One Should You Choose?
By Dubai Gold Jewellery · · Updated · 3 min read

Walk past any gold display in the UAE and you will see 18K, 21K and 22K side by side. All three are real gold; the difference is how much pure gold each contains, and that changes the colour, the strength and the price. Here is a straightforward comparison.
Purity at a glance
- 18K (750): 75% pure gold, 25% other metals.
- 21K (875): 87.5% pure gold, 12.5% other metals.
- 22K (916): about 91.6% pure gold, about 8.4% other metals.
The "other metals" are usually silver, copper and sometimes zinc or palladium. They are not a shortcut: they are what makes gold strong enough to wear, and they give it its shade.
Side by side
| 18K | 21K | 22K | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pure gold | 75% | 87.5% | 91.6% |
| Colour | Soft, elegant yellow; also made in white and rose | Rich, warm yellow | Deep, intense yellow |
| Hardness | Highest of the three | Medium | Softest of the three |
| Scratches and dents | Most resistant | Moderate | Marks more easily |
| Holding stones | Very secure | Good | Less suited to delicate settings |
| Price per gram | Lowest | Higher | Highest |
| Typical use | Everyday and modern jewellery, diamond pieces | Traditional Gulf jewellery | Traditional and bridal sets, many South Asian designs |
Colour
The more pure gold, the deeper the yellow. 22K has that intense, almost orange glow many people associate with traditional bridal gold. 21K is a rich yellow and has long been popular in the Gulf. 18K is a lighter, softer yellow that suits modern designs and pairs well with diamonds. Because 18K has more room for other metals, it is also the karat used for white gold and rose gold.
Hardness and everyday wear
Pure gold is soft, so higher karats bend and scratch more easily. That matters most for pieces that work hard: rings knock against surfaces, bracelets rub on desks, and chain links wear against each other. 18K keeps its shape and polish better day after day, and it holds claws and stone settings more securely, which is why most diamond jewellery is made in 18K.
Price and value
Gold is priced per gram according to its karat, so a gram of 22K costs more than a gram of 18K. Higher karats store more pure gold per gram, which is why some buyers choose them as a way of keeping value. If your priority is a piece you will actually wear every day, 18K usually gives the best balance of beauty, strength and price.
Which suits whom?
- Choose 18K for rings, everyday chains, bracelets, earrings, office wear, diamond or gemstone pieces, white or rose gold, and gifts for people with an active routine.
- Choose 21K if you love the classic Gulf look and want richer colour for occasions.
- Choose 22K for traditional or bridal sets worn on special days, where depth of colour matters more than resistance to knocks.
